How To Get Out Of A Style Rut!

Hi guys,

It is that time of year when you start getting in a bit of a style rut. When summer is drawing to an end but autumn isn’t quite here yet; you don’t want to invest in any more summer clothes, but autumn winter clothing is only trickling into the shops. Everywhere has sales. Nothing is inspiring you. You are quite frankly, in a big fat Style Rut.

Do you get that?

Well I do, and I am feeling that way right now. I know what styles I like; anything sporty, anything 80s/90s vintage, anything urban and now anything with a statement colour. However, I am just not loving my wardrobe right now and I haven’t been feeling very inspired.

Baggy T-shirts and trainers have been my go-to for the whole of summer and last autumn/winter. Don’t get me wrong I totally dig the tomboy-esque look on girls, however I feel like I need to make a bit more effort to dress feminine. I also feel like this will draw me out of my style rut!

I will be investing in some feminine pieces to team with the more sporty, vintage clothing I wear all the time. I think this will give my wardrobe a fresh update!

So todays look is doing just that!

I have on a classic retro sporty tee, which is my signature style. This one is by Le coq sportif, in a bright red with the blue logo. Totally loving this top, but rather than teaming it with jeans and trainers, I have opted for a black mini skirt with a peplum hem and some patent heeled boots.

The frilly skirt screams ‘girly’ and the boots give the outfit that dressy feel. Its all about mixing masculine cuts with feminine silhouettes, so that one isn’t overpowering the other. There are so many ways you can wear the sports trend without looking like a boy; and I think I will bare that in mind for the next season.

If you are feeling in a bit of a style rut and are feeling deflated after walking around the shops, then just take a good look at your wardrobe and see what you can tweak to add a bit more interest. For me it was the need of more feminine basics and footwear. For you it could be the need of some colour or some prints; it could be the need for some statement accessories to give your minimal styling a bit of an edge; or it could even be a change in the fit of denim jeans you wear?

Take some inspiration from things like Pinterest, Style blogs you like, or even the general public and see what is inspiring you. Screen shot, cut out pages of magazines, make a list, then go out and grab a handful of things you can add to lots of your everyday outfits. This will make you feel a bit better until this period of feeling in a bit in a fashion limbo is over.

Something else that is really good for getting yourself out of a style rut is to actually go into shops, pick up a good handful of clothing that you would never usually go for and try it on. You may walk out of the fitting room thinking ‘I hate it all, what was I doing’ but on the other hand you may be surprised by what pieces you end up falling for. Once you find something that has unexpectedly taken your fancy, buy it, take it home and try it on with things you already own and create a complete new outfit you’ve never worn before. This exercise will re-ignite your love of fashion and styling, I promise.

Give it another month and we will all be throwing our money at the shops again, grabbing ourselves new inspiring garments and rocking fabulous outfits. The rut will be over soon ha!
