This year designers rethought 80s office wear and the renowned fashion era of 80s power dressing for an updated, modern approach to its style. Opting for more hyper-feminine, individualistic looks to give uniform that much needed refresh.
You guys know that I am so into tailoring and suits and all that jazz and so I am a complete advocate for modern power dressing. For me, when you wear a smarter outfit, it fills you with confidence and signifies a strong, confident and independent female, which is a look that I am more than happy to wear!
We saw catwalks in New York for AW17 displaying visionary protest to the political turmoil cast by Trumps win of the presidential election; questioning what it really means to be a woman in the modern day. Fashion this year is backing the female, giving her strength and identity in the silhouettes and designs she will be wearing.
Power dressing this season is playing with modern femininity by slapping on some contemporary edge and I love it! On the catwalks and now on the high street there is a lot of colour, classic shirts and a personal favourite; statement stripes.
In todays post I have found the most amazing dupe for Mulberry SS17 catwalk vibes. This blazer is completely inspired by the striped blazer found in the Mulberry collection. This collection was all about bringing traditional British fashion into the modern era and central were these pyjama stripe silk separates. When I saw this blazer it reminded me so much of Mulberry that I snapped it up.
I adore blazers and think they are the ultimate outerwear piece for spring summer. Adding a blazer to your outfit is one of the easiest ways to adopt power dressing, the blazer is the ultimate signifier for girl boss vibes. I have styled my blazer on top of an ultra-feminine outfit; the blazer has that contemporary edge to its design which balances out the look.
To me, the blazer is reminiscent of traditional gentlemen’s boater jackets and that preppy look. Juxtaposing this with the super feminine, figure hugging, black bustier top underneath that features dainty straps and a sweetheart neckline; and the cute tailored shorts, I feel demonstrates the perfect update to power dressing for spring summer.
I have brought in colour, statement stripes and feminine tailoring. The satin materials of the blazer and the top gives the outfit that luxe feel and the shorts are more textured and in a natural hue which is on trend for spring summer. The shorts are also reminiscent of the pinstripe shirts used in Mulberry SS17 which I like. The subtle stripes to the shorts compliment the statement stripes pretty well for added interest.
The collection was all about ‘uniform without uniformity’ and that is a concept I will be adopting when styling tailored looks this summer for updated power dressing. Most importantly though, power dressing is all about exuding your inner confidence, what you wear on the outside should accentuate your alpha female attitude. The future is female!
The blazer in this look also comes with matching shorts for an all-out matchy, statement stripe look and the shorts I have styled have a matching blazer so each of these will be linked at the bottom of this post for you to shop as well! You could also style the white stripe blazer with the red statement stripe shorts for an alternate look which is what I love about buying separates, you can just mix and match! Ruche up the sleeves on your blazers for a cooler way of styling, it makes a blazer feel less formal.
I teamed out my outfit with some gorgeous gold, rope detail heeled sandals from Next, who you will know by now are my go-to retailer for footwear. I adore these shoes and they will be featured in more looks coming soon! Let me know what you think of this look!
