I know guys, you are all going to think I am mental.
However this is not clickbait, I really do mean it.
I Charnelle Geraldine, like the Instagram Algorithm.
I am just envisaging myself as the kid at the front of the class who tells the teacher they love it when they give homework; I can feel the bits of rubber being thrown at my head as I type these words.
I’m cool guys, I promise.
So unless you have been living in a hole, maybe the ‘rejection’ hole that the ‘Instagram Algorithm is said to push your new posts down when you upload them’. Then you will have seen the word, A-L-G-O-R-I-T-H-M thrown around every day by influencers in such a bad tone that you could nearly deem it to be a swear word.
The ‘Instagram Algorithm’ has been regarded as an attack on social influencers, a barrier for growth and almost a disease that we cannot cure, but need to try and combat by using particular methods.
The Algorithm to me is not a disease flowing through the app, spreading viruses that stop our pages from working; but more of heart. Just like a heart that pumps blood through arteries to where it needs to go, the algorithm is pushing content around to get it where it is sought.
Let’s get into the nitty gritty of my views.
The way I see it myself, is that Instagram, first and foremost is for The Users as a whole. Not everyone on Instagram is a blogger and not all of your personal followers are bloggers. These users are the people that Instagram want to cater to on the whole; and what is best for their experience, is to see images that they love the most.
Now these people may not be as Instagram obsessed as bloggers; and if they are, their experience of browsing is more likely to be less driven by their own personal progression. What they follow and like will be purely based on their honest interests and not for personal gain. If these users like your feed then they will definitely see your content. When looking back at the chronological algorithm, if these users are less active, they won’t see the posts uploaded hours before.
The Instagram Algorithm encourages engagement in this manner, so it’s a good thing!
That’s not all folks, there are lots more reasons as to why I like the Instagram Algorithm.
So many bloggers moan online about this topic that it is getting a little bit crazy, and a bit over-dramatized. We all get it now; chronological posts have gone, so it is now time to just get on with it. We can try and get people to turn on post notifications, but who the hell wants to do that in reality!?
There is one big thing that everyone seems to be overlooking.
The Instagram Algorithm affects everyone. Every user has this order to their feed. Every brand is affected; every influencer is affected, so that means we are essentially all in the same boat.
If posts aren’t getting as many likes as when we had a chronological order then that’s ok, because it’s happening to everyone. It’s also happening to brands so they will know that influencers are having this issue as well.
There is, essentially, nothing that we can do about it. So the only thing we can do is carry on and try and work with the Algorithm. Let’s not forget guys that blogging first and foremost should be fun! I know I have a really small following and people who use blogging as their only source of income will feel more in jeopardy, but this whole debate that is overtaking the platform is, I feel, damaging the impression bloggers give.
To the ordinary user, they want to know that what you are posting is done with passion and as an art almost; and not driven by numbers. If you think about it, fully-fledged brands do not comment on such topics over social media, ever!
Food for thought.
Let’s remember guys that there are avenues for working alongside the Algorithm. The Algorithm, I said, was like a heart; pumping content around to where it is wanted. Well, the answer to the Algorithm is to make sure that you are wanted by your following!
If your following is your muscles in your body then just like when you exert yourself in exercise and require more oxygen, your heart will start to pump faster to get the increased amount of blood to your muscles. If you work harder on your content and achieve more interest, then the Algorithm will help pump your content to the top of your followers’ feeds.
What’s the best way to keep your following engaged and be boosted by the Algorithm?
Create great quality content.
Create content that people love. If they love it, they will engage with it and then they will see your future posts. This gives you an advantage over people who throw out lots of content that isn’t as good quality.
I don’t stress myself over numbers, I am proud of my following and my engagement and actually I really don’t feel I have suffered with the update. The Algorithm ensures that your posts have a longer lifespan. In the old chronological feed, it was fact that your posts would get half of their engagement within the first hour; however you will know that you now get people engage hours later or even a week later.
When I post something that doesn’t pick up engagement straight away, I check back a few days later and it has, most of the time, caught up.
So yes, that is my opinion guys. I like the Instagram Algorithm; and I hope you are picking up the pieces of rubber and giving me an apology pat on the back now. Haha!
I think most people will disagree with this post but that’s ok; we all have different views and experiences. I would love to know what you think about the Instagram Algorithm and how you feel it has affected your content compared with the chronological order! Has this post made you feel any different?
